OUR OWN QUESTION · STILL HAPPENING
Omelet Nights
by the Chosen Family
Two friends who couldn’t afford to eat out any more. It turned out the restaurant was never the point.
Eggs
Whatever else is in the fridge
Two or three people who don’t need to be impressed
One kitchen
No plan for the evening
How it started
It started with two friends. Me and one of my closest. Our friendship had mostly lived in cafés and restaurants — that’s how we connected, sitting across from each other over food someone else made. Even at home, we’d order in.
Then life did what it does. One day, sitting together, we realised we couldn’t really afford to eat out any more. Both of us were in a strange place financially. There was a pause in the conversation where neither of us knew what to do with that.
So I said: what if we just make something? The simplest thing, with whatever we have. It was never about the food. It’s about us meeting.
We went into the kitchen and made the easiest thing we could think of. Eggs, a few random things. And it was so much fun — not just the eating, the making. Standing side by side. Chopping, stirring, tasting. We laughed the whole time. Something shifted. It felt more honest.
Later we started inviting other friends. Not everyone came every time, but the ones who did got it. No pressure, no performance. Just a quiet invitation to come as you are, bring what you can, and be present.
We called it Omelet Nights, and it became a small ritual of our chosen family — the people we pick to walk with, share with, grow with. Not bound by blood, but by care, by time, by intention.

Find one or two people. Not a guest list.
02
Make something cheap and simple.
03
Cook together rather than for each other.
04
Presence, not presentation. Nobody is being hosted.
05
Wash up together. This part matters more than it sounds.
06
Do it again when it wants to happen, not on a schedule.
